The SMI connector is a small-form-factor connector design developed for the consumer electronics market as an optical fiber replacement for Cat 5 copper cables. It utilizes a push-pull design that is both small and low cost, making it the perfect solution for business and home networking, consumer electronics and factory automation. Currently, connector designs and transceiver characterizations exist only for 1 mm step-index core plastic optical fiber. Industrial Fiber Optics has seven product lines with SMI terminations ranging from low-cost, commercial temperature range home use, to dual-jacketed fibers for factory and industrial automation.
